Gobble, Gobble...Bang!!!

Spring Turkey season may be the best hunting experience of the year in Wisconsin if you ask me. Crisp mornings, lots of birds chirping and monster gobbles coming up from the valleys in and around Hollandale. This year, dad was going to have to carry the burden as he was the only one in the family who was able to go so far. Here is his story...

He got up at 2 am and made the 3 hour drive to the Theobald Farm in Barneveld, Wisconsin. He set up to the left side of the drainage ditch that heads from the old farm house down to the creek. He made a few soft calls which gained him about six geese in the field near his blind at about ten yards that aren't in season. Later, some turkeys poked their heads out into the field some 200+ yards further towards the corner of Dale & Arlene's property. After sitting a few hours, dad packed up the blind and moved closer towards the corner where he left his goods and headed out for a bite to eat.

After lunch and a nap, he walked in to his blind and proceeded to resume his nap. Much later in the afternoon, he awoke and took a peek around. In time, three turkeys entered the field and made a bee-line for his decoys. The came in at 17 yards and after patiently waiting for the bunch to present themselves, dropped a jake with a 5 inch beard using his 20 gauge pump shotgun. A jake is a juvenile male and okay to shoot in the spring hunt, only hens can not be shot. Dad then took the bird over to the farm to show Dale & Arlene and get some photos taken. Then off to Chris' to hang out for the evening before coming home the next day.

Congrats Dad on bagging your first turkey!!! Dad also said that my cousin Jeff went spotlighting in the last week or so and had counted 70+ deer on the farm!!! We're anticipating a great fall deer season this year!!!
